Laura Baruël

Laura Baruël
Laura Baruël works as a scientist in an undefined area between design, craft, set design and art. The outcome is experimental fashion design ranging from one off exhibition pieces to ready to wear dresses with a unique quality. With both the exhibition  and the ready to wear pieces she explores the mental and physical connection between man and nature – a connection she believes modern man has repressed.

History
Laura Baruël is educated from the Danish Design school in Copenhagen as a fashion designer and holds a BA in Art History. Since her graduation she has been participating in several exhibitions and solo shows, most recently the Spring show 2008 at Kunsthal Charlottenborg, Copenhagen curated by designer Karim Rashid. In 2010 she is participating in Expo in Beijing and later this year she is going to work on a Nordic textile project in Fiskars Artist Residency in Finland.

Presentation
Danish designer Laura Baruel was a fashion competition finalist at ITS#FOUR. Her passion and interest for nature and its phenomena has always been central in her work. Some of you might remember one of her outfits, a sort of transparent raincoat with dozens of leaves from different kinds of plants embedded inside. Laura went on to expand that concept in her exhibition "Wilderness" presented at the Art Museum of Copenhagen in early 2007, marking her passage from fashion design to proper art  installation. Laura is interested in exploring and visualising the relationship between man, garment and place. Through a very elaborate process she "freezes" vegetable fibres into the clothes, creating real fabrics made of leaves and plants, studying the colours, light and nature of her Nordic landscape.
